Thesis In the Works

Here's what I have so far. It's very likely to change but we'll see where it goes. Help me out!

The novel The Perks of Being a Wallflower can be better understood when comparing it to the motion picture because of the musical implications and visual relationships depicted in both the book and movie. When does not work without the other which is why they should both be experienced by the audience.

I'm going to talk to my "homies" in person as a way of circulating it.

  1. Interesting! As English majors and most, if not all of us, being avid readers, are usually put off when someone says that a book is dependent on its movie adaptation. In fact, I don't know if I've ever heard that argument. However, I'm curious about this and now really want to watch the movie and read the book. Are there things better communicated through the music and visual relationships in the movie that aren't present in the book? If so, was this only the director's intention, or did the author help in the production of the movie? Does the involvement of the author in the movie matter? I don't know much about this book/movie, but these are things that would help me better understand their intentions.

  2. Having seen the movie and read the book, it's easier to see where you could go with this. The music plays such an important role in the book that you almost feel like you're missing out because you can't hear it while you read. But if you take them both, the book and the movie, into consideration you can experience the full effect. I think it's a good idea. It's definitely different to have a focus on the movie adaptation. I think it would be very interesting to read.
